This spring marks an important milestone for Newport. After years of planning, analysis, and community conversation, the City is preparing to launch paid on-street parking on the Bayfront, a long-anticipated step toward better managing one of the most heavily used areas on Oregon’s Central Coast.
Our team was proud to support the City in this effort by leading the development of Newport’s Parking Management Plan, which provided the analytical and policy foundation for today’s implementation. That work focused on understanding parking demand during both peak tourist season and the off-season, and on crafting strategies tailored to Newport’s three distinct activity centers: the Bayfront, Nye Beach, and City Center. Rather than defaulting to new parking supply, the plan emphasized practical management tools—pricing, time limits, and district-specific policies—to improve turnover and access.
The Bayfront meter rollout represents Newport’s first major step toward modern, data-driven parking management. Paid parking is a proven way to ensure that scarce curbside spaces are available for the people who need them most—customers, visitors, and short-term users—while also creating a sustainable funding source to support enforcement and ongoing improvements to the system.
As the meters go live, this moment is worth celebrating. Implementing paid parking is never easy, especially in a community shaped by tourism and strong local identity. Newport’s willingness to take this step reflects thoughtful leadership and a long-term commitment to managing growth in a way that supports local businesses, residents, and visitors alike. We’re excited to see this next chapter begin and look forward to continuing the conversation as the system evolves.
